Continue a long conversation with a shorter context

When a Chat becomes long, Compact Context asks your selected model to summarize its older messages. The summary and the recent messages you keep form a new path in the same Chat.

Open Naidan and choose the long Chat you want to continue. If first-time setup appears, choose a working endpoint and model and finish setup before compacting.

Choose a working model and endpoint first. Read the generated summary before relying on it: a model can miss or misstate details. If you still need to set up a model, see local model connection options or browser model setup.

1. Open Compact Context from the Chat header

Open More Actions (the three dots) in the Chat header, then choose Compact Context. Super Edit is a separate action beside it for changing the conversation history yourself.

Compact Context is in the header’s More Actions menu.

2. Choose how many recent messages to keep

The dialog initially keeps up to six recent messages. In a shorter Chat, the count drops so at least one older message remains to summarize. Move the slider or choose a preset to set the count; the older messages shown as “To compact” will be summarized. A preset is unavailable when the Chat is too short for that count.

Here, four older messages are summarized and six recent messages are kept.

3. Check the prompt and start the summary

Expand Compact Prompt if you want to edit the instruction sent with the older messages. Select Compact Now to start. The progress strip shows the request and incoming summary. While the model is generating, Abort compact stops the operation without adding a new path.

The editable instruction, Compact Now and progress strip follow the selected keep count.

4. Review the new path before continuing

The completed summary becomes an assistant message at the start of a new path, followed by copies of the recent messages you kept. The Chat switches to this path. Its original history remains available through message versions.

The shorter path is in the same Chat; the original path is retained.
