Chat with Chrome’s built-in AI language model

On desktop Chrome 148 or later, Naidan can chat with Chrome’s built-in AI language model. Chrome manages it on your device, so you do not enter a server URL or choose a model file.

How Chrome’s model answers your chat

Naidan sends your question to Chrome’s model on this device and shows the answer as it arrives. Chrome may need to download and prepare the model the first time; you do not choose its files.

This check does not prepare a model or guarantee chat with every language or setting.

Chrome and device requirements

Chrome requires Windows 10/11, macOS 13+, Linux, or a Chromebook Plus with ChromeOS platform 16389.0.0+; at least 22 GB free on the drive with your Chrome profile; and either a GPU with more than 4 GB VRAM or at least 16 GB RAM and four CPU cores. The first model download needs an unmetered or unlimited connection. Chrome on Android or iOS and other Chromebooks are not supported.

Chrome’s model supports Japanese text input and output from Chrome 149. Naidan and this page check availability without specifying input or output languages, so an available result does not confirm Japanese responses.

First, open /#/settings/connection to set up the model in Naidan.

If first-run setup appears, close it with the × at the top right. The linked Connection settings stay open for the steps below.

1. Open Connection settings

The link above opens Settings on the Connection tab. You can also select Settings at the bottom of the sidebar and choose Connection if another tab is open.

Open the Connection panel from the sidebar Settings button.

2. Choose Chrome’s model and check its status

Under API Provider, choose Browser-provided. The status panel checks whether Chrome can offer its model and shows whether it is ready or needs preparation. The option remains visible when unavailable so you can read the reason.

Choose Browser-provided to see Chrome’s model status below the provider.

3. Prepare the model if offered

If the panel offers Prepare browser-provided model, select it to start Chrome’s model download and preparation. Naidan shows progress or an error reported by Chrome. If the model is already ready, skip this step.

The preparation action changes to download and preparation progress, then a ready state.

4. Save the connection

In Model Selection, the browser-provided model is set automatically and Default Model cannot be changed. Select Save Changes to use this connection in existing and new chats that inherit the global endpoint. A ready model is required before it can answer.

The model selection is fixed for this provider; save the selected connection.

After saving, close Settings, choose New Chat in the sidebar, type a message, and send it. Chrome’s model can answer once it is ready.

If Chrome says the model is unavailable

If Chrome meets the requirements but the status panel still says unavailable, read the reason shown there and retry if offered. Naidan cannot enable a missing LanguageModel API or install Chrome’s managed model independently.
